Alternative Processes
I became attracted to this artwork because of its striking silhouette—the iconic Barbie, instantly recognizable yet elegantly reduced to an outline.
I create photograms and cyanotypes on paper, as well as incorporate commercial fabrics, to critically examine the societal expectations surrounding the female form, expressing this through dynamic interactions with the dolls.
This journey has led me to discover Campus Cuties, which possess their own distinct, gendered postures and an array of titles, for example "Nitey Night." See more on Instagram, @nancygracehortonstudio.
Most of these pieces are exposed outdoors, harnessing the sunlight, and in varying sizes, with each photograph being a unique piece. My most recent work, however, is taking advantage of my darkroom during the colder months.
